University of Maryland Capital Region Health’s 32nd Golf Classic

For 32 years, the University of Maryland Capital Region Health Foundation has hosted a charity golf classic. This is one of the longest running charity events. The new University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center in Largo will be opening in 2021. The funds raised at the tournament on June 17 at the Lake Presidential Golf Club in Upper Marlboro will go toward top-of-the-line heart and vascular services in the new center. Since its inception, this event has raised $10 million for the medical facilities. 

Allen Pond Park to Hold Father’s Day Concert

In celebration of fathers this year, Allen Pond Park in Bowie is hosting a Father’s Day Outdoor Concert June 16. During the summer months, the City of Bowie puts on a free Summer Sunday concert series from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day weekend at the Robert V. Setera Amphitheater. The concerts are on Sunday evenings from 7–8 p.m.

Council Hears Plans to Expand Horse Racing in Bowie, Laurel

The Maryland Jockey Club briefed the City Council on its plans for horse racing properties in Bowie and Laurel. The Stronach Group, one of the largest operators of horse racetracks in America, currently holds Pimlico, Laurel Park, Bowie Track and Rosecroft. The Maryland Jockey Club, which focuses on investing in and expanding horse racing, hopes to expand Laurel Park to move the Preakness from Baltimore to there. They told the City Council that the proposed plan would turn Bowie Track into a top training facility.
